“It’s not unpatriotic to denounce an injustice…perhaps it’s the most patriotic thing we can do.”
― E.A. Bucchianeri
I am a WASP, a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. And a male. But I am not a misogynist, bigot, racist, xenophobe or homophobe.
Not so long ago, WASP men were at the apex of American society. They ruled politically and economically, everyone else only existed to serve their wants and needs. Women were to be kept barefoot and pregnant, only allowed a say in the kitchen and nursery. Non-WASPs existed to work their fields or in factories to make them rich or to otherwise serve them.
It was their God-given right, it was said. Even from the pulpits, especially in the South. God is male (that’s how Holy Scripture describes him), he took the faith away from the Christ-killing Jews and gave it to the White Europeans through the Apostle Paul and, by divine revelation gave us the Reformation showing us he’s Protestant. That is what was taught. That is what was believed.
Then, everything started to take a turn. The Black slaves were freed. Then they got the vote. Women started taking men’s jobs and getting college educations. And they got the vote.
Now it’s foreigners crossing the border from Mexico looking for work and a better life, Muslims and Middle Easterners asking for asylum and a safe place to raise a family, and the Gays and Transgenders wanting acceptance for who they are as human beings.
What remains of the WASP-male citadel is under siege on all sides.
Everyone wants to be accepted and treated fairly, treated with respect, treated with equality. In every way.
As they should.
It is an injustice that women and minorities are still having to struggle with some benighted American male WASP’s who are still clinging for dear life to the memory of “the good old days”, to their false belief in superiority and fighting every gain women and minorities have made and their justifiable demand for true equality.
To oppose their right to true equality, or to turn our backs on the foreigner seeking the promise of Lady Liberty, is unpatriotic and unAmerican.
That’s why I support the Women’s March this Saturday.
Tens of thousands of women and others will be marching on Washington, D.C. Tens of thousands more will be marching in over 100 cities, nation-wide. Peacefully. Respectfully. To call our attention to the issue of equal rights, equal treatment, real equality for all.
To those who are going to march, I support and applaud you. Know that I and those who can’t (for whatever reason) march with you are at least with you in spirit.
Your march in protest to the – still – inequities in our society involving gender, sex, race, religion – and more – is not only the patriotic thing to do, it is the morally right thing to do.
The society once conceived and enforced by the male WASP was based on a lie. It’s past its time to go the way of the dinosaur it is.
All God’s children are beautiful in his sight – not just male WASPs – and deserve acceptance as such, with due respect and equal treatment by all.
